The common structure is a base RM80–RM110 daily rate, plus a season-end share of harvest revenue. A single Bangladeshi worker with a backpack mist blower (Mist Blower model: Maruyama MF-655LE, which is the standard in Pahang) covers only 0.5 to 0.7 hectares per day on a sloped orchard layout. Grass, tree spacing of 8m x 8m, and slope break the walking line.

The actual 5-year burden per worker includes:

– Daily wage: RM80 x 280 spray days = RM22,400/year

– Foreign Worker Levy (plantation sector, non-oil palm): RM1,850/year

– Food and lodging (worker hostel at the batu or repurposed estate quarters): RM3,000–RM4,500/year

– SOCSO and medical: ~RM800/year minimum

Add a second worker for a 20-hectare block, and the true annual cost is closer to RM41,000–RM45,000—not the RM19,000 many owners quote in their own ledgers. Over five years, you are past RM205,000 in labour alone. That’s before idle days, the annual 4-week worksite closure for migrant repatriation during deep Raya season, and the rising risk that the replacement levy rule (Tetap) or the newly proposed 2025 labour regulations push the per-head levy to RM2,500.

T50/XAG Field Economics and Battery Depreciation You Can’t Skip

A fully-kitted DJI Agras T50 package (6x 40,000mAh batteries, charger, hard case, and the C2 standard remote) costs RM92,000–RM115,000 in Malaysia depending on GST/import tier and the local dealer in Sri Gombak or Tampoi, Johor. The XAG P100 Pro is slightly cheaper at RM88,000 but reaches 40kg payload versus the T50’s 50kg.

Here is what field agents in the Kechau Valley won’t tell you:

– The T50’s Li-ion batteries hold only ~200–300 robust charging cycles in tropical heat. At 50% depth-of-discharge (which is how you preserve them), you get roughly 2 seasons before a pack starts swelling. Six packs at RM9,000–RM11,000 each means a RM60,000 battery replacement bill in Year 2 or Year 3.

– Flight planning: you must use the DJI Agras app for grid mapping, or map with a Phantom 4 RTK. The RTK base station adds RM8,000–RM15,000, and in Raub the RTK correction signal fails badly under a heavy durian canopy due to multipath interference.

– Spare parts: the pump, flowmeter, and sprinkler nozzle assembly—a pumping set that fails after roughly 80,000 L of sprayed liquid. Replacement pump costs RM15,000 and has a 6-week backorder from Shenzhen.

– Oil palm estates can push 30–40 ha/day with a T50. Orchard terrain reduces this to 12–16 ha/day because you need to sidestep tall trees and maintain a 4m safety buffer from power lines.

The Painful Truth: Canopy Penetration in 35-Metre Durians

This is the bottleneck. Musang King trees in mature Raub blocks reach 12–20 metres with a thick leaf canopy. The T50’s downwash airflow only forces droplets properly into the top 2–3 metres of the canopy. The bottom half—where fungal diseases (Phytophthora palmivora) attack the fruit spurs—remains dry unless you use a very fine droplet size. Set the nozzle to XR11001 (fine mist) and you get drift beyond the boundary line; set it to coarse and the inside of the canopy gets zero coverage.

Manual workers, on the other hand, reach the bottom internodes with a lancing head and direct spray inside the foliage. On already tall (>30m) village durian trees, neither method truly works—you’d need a truck-mounted tree sprayer with a 20m tower boom, which is only available in large estates around Tampin.

The practical compromise in Malaysia is split: use a drone for the open upper canopy, keep a manual crew for lower canopy and fruit-spur coverage. That immediately doubles your labour cost per pass—now you’re paying for both systems.

DCA Licensing, Pesticide Permits, and Insurance Overheads

You cannot simply buy a T50 and fly it to spray in Raub. Malaysia requires:

– A DCA Remote Pilot Certificate (RAP) for agricultural spray operations—RM3,500–RM5,500 for the course plus RM500 exam fee at a CAAM-approved training organisation (e.g., AeroCademy in Subang SkyPark).

– A Certificate of Approval (CoA) for the operator company from the DCA RPAS office. This requires an approved Operations Manual, a safety risk assessment (SORA), and at least one documented flight trial. Counselling and preparation fees run RM8,000–RM12,000.

– The Department of Agriculture (DOA) Pesticide Board’s “Aerial Spraying Permit” for each pesticide product used—especially for products containing chlorpyrifos and mancozeb, which are under investigation for stricter restrictions.

– Insurance: aerial application liability policies in Malaysia run RM2,500–RM4,000 per year per drone, with exclusions for drift damage onto neighbouring orchards. A drift incident into a neighbouring durian block during flowering can easily lead to a RM30,000 compensation claim.

On a 20-hectare farm with 10 spray passes per season, these compliance costs pile on an effective RM35–RM50 per hectare per pass—often not accounted for in feasibility decks.

Break-Even Hectarage: 50 Hectares or Stay Manual

Render the full 5-year calc for 20 hectares (200 cumulative hectare-sprays per year):

Line Item

5-Year Cost (RM)

Key Factor

Best For

Manual crew (2 workers)

205,000

Wage, levy, food, accommodation, SOCSO

Blocks under 20 ha, low-lying canopy (<10m)

DJI Agras T50 purchase + charger/setup

95,000

One-time; loan interest adds 7–9% if financed

High-frequency spray schedules (>15 passes/yr)

DJI Agras T50 battery replacement

60,000

200 cycles per pack; tropical heat shortens life

Only if you protect packs in aircon storage

On-site pilot labour (full-time, RM3,500/mo)

210,000

DCA certified; flight planning + mixing duty

Multi-farm or cooperative ownership

Spare parts (pump, nozzles, VRT, valve)

22,000

Pump failure ~80k L; RTK base station repair

High volumetric use

DCA CoA + RAP + Pesticide Board permit

10,000–15,000

Recurring 5-year renewal and audit

Commercial spray service providers

Total drone solution (20 ha, 10 passes/yr)

395,000–402,000

Requires 12–16 ha/day real output

Farms above 50 ha or with ≤5m tree heights

The verdict is arithmetic. On a 20-hectare durian block, manual labour remains cheaper for 10 passes a year. The drone only wins when:

1. You push spraying frequency above 15 passes (common in red-fleshed D14 and D190 producing for the Guang Zhou jet-shipping market), because the manual crew’s 333 worker-days jumps to 500+ worker-days.

2. Your orchard is above 50 hectares, where a drone + pilot spreads fixed DCA costs across more land.

3. Your labour availability drops—which is already happening in Raub, where foreign worker quotas fell by 19% in 2024 per Ministry of Home Affairs data.

For most small orchards, the smart long-term move is not to replace the crew. It is to buy an Agras T50 as a cooperatively-shared service unit (4–5 neighbouring farms pooling cost), keep the manual crew for the bottom canopy, and then compare drone-only spray records YOY against the mist-blower-based tree health data in your FIFCAP (Malaysia’s farm recording app supported by DOA) before expanding the drone route further.

Ready to Accelerate Your Digital Growth Strategy?

Partner with an industry-leading digital agency to upscale your infrastructure today.

Get Started for Free Today

Quick Summary: On a 20-hectare Raub Musang King block, the 5-year total cost of a DJI Agras T50 sprayer with a full-time, DCA-certified pilot lands at roughly RM395k, versus RM205k for two manual mist-blowing crews under the Foreign Workers Levy scheme—canopy penetration and height limits, not purchase price, decide where the break-even point actually sits.
